New Logo, Same Mission

Today we’re proud to introduce our new logo — a symbol of hope, growth, and a bold, bright future ahead. The open door within our logo represents both our mission and our heart: welcoming those in need with compassion, dignity, and support. As OBX Room In The Inn continues to grow and evolve, we wanted a logo that reflects who we are today and the future we are building for our community — cleaner, stronger, and focused on where we’re going next. While our look has changed, our mission…

2025-2026 Season Concluded

Dear Friends of OBX Room In The Inn,

We just finished our 17th year of food, shelter, and clothing for those in need. With the help of Nags Head Church, the shelter was deep cleaned and returned to our landlord Jim Rose April 30. We can’t express how thankful we are to them.

By the numbers for the months of November through April, we have provided 2164 room nights, 6492 meals, and the average age was 49. That is a 25% increase over last year’s data. The year around our intake center is open to provide food and clothing, along with support services.

April was Volunteer Appreciation Month—a time to recognize the extraordinary generosity that fuels our mission every day. Over the past six months, volunteers have contributed to meals, supplies, transportation, and support. Their compassion and care are at the very heart of Room In The Inn’s story—a story that started with a community that refused to turn its back on neighbors in need of food and shelter.

Twenty-Three churches across the Outer Banks made our mission possible this year. During April Roanoke Island Presbyterian, Colington UMC, Manteo Baptist and Cape Hatteras Baptist (all the way from Frisco!) provided food and supplies. Thank you to those churches and Clarks Bethel Methodist Church (all the way from Salvo!), Kitty Hawk Baptist, Kitty Hawk UMC, Nags Head Church, St. Andrews by the Sea, Duck Church, Grace Lutheran, Liberty Christian Church, Son Rise Church of Christ, Manteo First Assembly, Holy Redeemer by the Sea, Mount Olivet United Methodist, All Saints Episcopal, Outer Banks Presbyterian, Bethany United Methodist, Bethany Church of Wanchese, Light House Christian Fellowship, Corolla Chapel and Wanchese Assembly for blessing those in need and OBX RITI this last six months with food and supplies. There is no way we could do this without the churches of the OBX. Numerous businesses and individuals, Pigman’s BBQ, Suzie and Joe Trainer, John and Julia Head, Gail Hutchison, Cathy and Dan Turner, Chris and John Cimko, Pathways to Life crew, Outer Banks Hospital, Lynn Serman, Brannon and Leslie Godfrey, Randy Jones, Wes Stepp (Red Sky and NC Coast) and others that filled the needs.

April 25th, at the Hilton Garden Inn we hosted our third annual “Seaside Soirée 2026-Fund the Need” silent and live auction. Sponsored by the Jane Webster, Evans Family Fund, and Orca Wealth Management LLC. Our thanks to them and Mixin Mike, Greg Smrdel, George and Anna McCollough, and Heavenly Honey for their support. Nearly 200 local businesses and individuals donated items to make this possible, and the many people who purchased tickets and items. We are in awe of the support and commitment to helping those in need on the OBX. Special thanks to the Outer Banks Woman’s Club and Kitty Hawk Rotary for the help they have given us at this event and during the year.

Most importantly, 12 guests were rehoused this year! That is a record for us. The Outer Banks Community Foundation awarded us a grant that made paying deposits, first and last month’s rent to get our guests into stable housing possible. Thank you to every person/owner/landlord who helped us make this happen. God is Good!

Together, we can create solutions to help those in need. If you or your church might be interested in supporting the efforts, please check us out on our website www.obxroomintheinn.org, respond to this email or call 252-255-1133 for more information and join us!

March Community Update

Dear Friends of Room In The Inn,

Happy Easter! It is about three weeks before the shelter closes for the season. We continue to scramble to find affordable housing for our guests. This year seems tougher than past years with more demands on applications, higher costs, and fewer locations available. Earlier this year we received a grant from the Outer Banks Community Foundation to help with deposits/rents for our guests. That grant has opened doors for us, making it possible for those who can pay monthly rent, but can never save enough to get into a place of their own. To date we have helped 4 guests find housing. Ideally, we wish we could financially help all our guests more and continue praying to become a year around shelter, be able to offer transitional housing, and space for families and children.

For the last 16 years we have been supplying food, shelter, and clothing for those in need on the OBX. By the numbers for the months of November, December, January, February, and March we have provided 1896 room nights, 5688 meals, and the average age is 50. This is a 25% increase over March 2025. We need your support more than ever!

So many churches across the Outer Banks have made our mission possible. A special thank you to Holy Redeemer by the Sea, Kitty Hawk Baptist, OBX Presbyterian, Nags Head Church, and St. Andrews by the Sea for blessing those in need and OBX RITI this last month with food and supplies. St. Andrews offered our guests a special meal out; it was a treat for all. There is no way we could do this without the churches on the OBX.

We need your support on April 25, 4-6pm, at the Hilton Garden Inn . We are hosting our “Seaside Soirée 2026-Fund The Need” silent and live auction. Sponsored by the Jane Webster, Evans Family Fund, and Orca Wealth Management, LLC Tickets and reserved tables can be purchased at https://givebutter.com/2026-seaside-soiree-xmwq3d . A huge thank you to the 250 businesses that have so generously donated to make this possible. Please help us fund the balance of this year and the 2026-27 17th season of shelter in Dare Co.

Please consider making a reoccurring monthly donation to support your neighbor’s experiencing homelessness, click this link https://givebutter.com/dS5tBl . Together, we can create solutions to help those in need. If you or your church might be interested in supporting the efforts please check us out on our website www.obxroomintheinn.org, respond to this email or call 252-255-1133 for more information and join us!

Thank you to everyone for supporting those in need and for partnering with Room In The Inn! It truly takes a village!

January Community Update

Dear Friends of Room In The Inn,

Homelessness doesn’t take a break when dangerous winter weather looms. For those experiencing unsheltered homelessness, safe, warm shelter can be the difference between life and death.

The shelter has been full or nearly for much of the last two months. By the numbers since November 1, we have provided 2974 meals, 990 room nights, and the average age was 51. A special thank you to Kitty Hawk UMC, All Saints, Colington UMC, Manteo First Assembly, and Grace Lutheran for blessing those in need with food and supplies in January.

Thank you so much for the donations you’ve been sending in and dropping off! Grace Lutheran and Wanchese Assembly of God deserves a special shout out for making sure the shelter received warm meals during the storm. Extraordinary circumstances call for extraordinary responses and the Outer Banks Health Hospital stepped up with a large donation of food. Monday, as nearly all of the county was closed, OBX Room In The Inn was at work to serve our neighbors. We are blessed by a caring team who met this moment of urgency with dedication and compassion. Thanks to you and in large part to this community whose generous support makes it possible for us to show up for our most vulnerable neighbors during this time of great need.

When the temperature drops below 40 degrees, we offer the guests to stay in during the day. Most of the guests have jobs working outside and continue working, but because the winter weather continues to be relentless, with low temperatures numerous guests are staying in the shelter 24/7. While the shelter is full, we try to connect with as many people as possible to provide them with winter supplies, such as coats, sleeping bags, food and hand warmers. Thank you is deserved by the Nags Head Church for offering an emergency shelter and warming center over last weekend’s storms. Our primary focus remains to become a year around shelter, and together we can make this a reality.

Can you help? If you or your church might be interested in supporting the efforts, please check us out on our website www.obxroomintheinn.org, respond to this email or call 252-255-1133 for more information and join us!

We apologize for not having the correct person on this email list, so please share this information with your organization! Thank you to everyone for supporting those in need and for partnering with OBX Room In The Inn! Happy Valentines Day!

Live Generously, Give Generously,

Shari

Community Update

Dear Friends of Room In The Inn,

We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. OBX Room In The Inn is now in its 16th season of providing food, shelter, and clothing to our neighbors in need, and we are deeply grateful for your continued support.

This November alone, we provided 198 room nights, served 601 meals, and supported guests with an average age of 58. These numbers reflect both the growing need in our community and the compassion of those who rally to help. A heartfelt thank you goes out to Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, Cape Hatteras Baptist Church, Grace Lutheran Church, John Head, Gail Hutchison, Cathy Turner, Chris Kelley Cimko, Pathways to Life, Outer Banks Hospital, Lynn Sherman, Angie Eaton, Brannon Godfrey, Randy Jones, and Pigman’s BBQ for the food, supplies, and generosity they shared throughout November.

Our Thanksgiving meal was beautifully prepared by Wes Stepp, Red Sky, and NC Coast and was truly a blessing. We are also grateful to the many groups and businesses that dropped off food over the past month.

To everyone who supported our Lunch To Go Fall Fundraiser on November 16th: Thank you. This event was made possible through the generosity of Kelly’s Catering, along with Sysco, US Foods, and Performance Food Group. Nearly 500 meals were served thanks to the hard work of the Outer Banks Women’s Club, our friend Don, our Board Members, and the entire RITI team. We are deeply appreciative of every hand that helped.

Every story of homelessness is a story not only of hardship, but of perseverance, resilience, and hope. Today, more than 250,000 people nationwide experience unsheltered homelessness—living outdoors or in places not meant for human habitation. And while studies show that nearly 90% of those experiencing homelessness would move into housing if it were available, individuals fall into homelessness faster than resources can keep up.

This is why Room In The Inn is working tirelessly toward a critical goal: becoming a year-round shelter.

We believe our community deserves consistent, reliable support for our most vulnerable neighbors, not only during the winter months but throughout the entire year. Reaching this goal will require partnership, dedication, and the collective strength of our community—and we truly need your help to make it possible.

As we move into the holiday season, we ask you to consider making a donation to support our mission and to help us take the next steps toward year-round operations. If you, your business, or your church are interested in partnering with us, please visit www.obxroomintheinn.org, reply to this email, or call 252-255-1133. We would love to have you join us in this life-changing work.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support Room In The Inn. Your compassion makes this work possible. It truly takes a village.

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

To whom much is given, much is required,

Shari
