Guinness World Record

On September 22, Skydive OBX will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most tandem parachute jumps in 24 hours. It’s a thrilling challenge, but it’s also a powerful opportunity to rally support for a cause that truly matters.

A portion of every dollar raised during this event goes directly toward the only homeless shelter in Dare County. In just over 60 days, on November 1st, we’ll open our doors for the 16th season, welcoming those who have nowhere else to turn as the cold months approach.

Your support helps us stock supplies, prepare beds, and ensure that every person who walks through our doors is met with warmth, dignity, and hope.

Be part of the action and come watch history unfold as we take to the skies for a record-breaking day. Cheer on the jumpers, meet our team, and see firsthand how your generosity fuels both adrenaline and compassion.

Thank you for standing with us. Let’s make history and make a difference, together.

Community Update

Dear Friends of Room In The Inn,

As summer winds down and families prepare for the back-to-school season, we’re also looking ahead with gratitude and anticipation as we prepare to open our doors for the 17th season of OBX Room In The Inn. This fall, we’ll once again come together to provide food, shelter, and clothing for our neighbors in need.

During the 2024–25 season, thanks to the incredible support of 20 churches and 143 dedicated volunteers, we were able to offer 1,643 nights of shelter and serve 4,935 meals. The average guest was 48 years old, a reminder that homelessness can affect people at any stage of life.

We strive to unite the community to end homelessness, one life at a time. As part of uniting the community, we open our doors wide to welcome those we serve, our volunteers, and our donors. We value that we are united in common purpose to meet the basic needs of fellow humans and to walk with people in need.

We appreciate that many of you have reached out to see how our work is impacted by recent changes, or potential changes, with funding. We thought it might also be helpful to share some of the principles that will guide us as we communicate with our RITI community about what is happening around us.

We believe our work is part of the public good. We believe in the concept of a public good — there are certain things that are core to the well-being of a community that are only possible through collective action. Our goal is that if someone finds themselves in a housing crisis, there is a safety net that allows their basic needs to be met.

We value being good stewards of resources. We are not opposed to efficiency or change. We believe there are ways to reimagine how services are provided, funded, and want to listen to both data and to those most impacted by this work to guide us.

We have a unique responsibility to speak to our mission. While we may hold opinions on a variety of topics, but we will work to provide accurate information regarding impact to those we serve and to our work.

How is OBX Room In the Inn funded?

Room in the Inn has four primary sources of funding: private giving, grant funding, events, and in-kind donations. In 2024-25 budget ending June 30 private giving made up about 51% of our yearly budget, grant funding contributes nearly 16%, events contributed over 9%, and in-kind gifts of food, clothing, supplies supported over 24% of our budget need.

There is a way for everyone to help us in our mission! We cannot thank enough the twenty churches, individuals, companies, and supporters across the OBX that provided hot meals, needed supplies, monetary donations, and support that was invaluable to us during our 2024-25 season. If you or your church might be interested in supporting the efforts, we are having our Church Coordinator meeting in September. Respond to this email or call 252-255-1133 for more information and join us!

Thank you!

Together, by joining our team and volunteers, public and private funders, we can show up for our neighbors in a housing crisis. We believe this work makes a difference not just for those we serve, but for the entire community. Thank you for being part of this work!

In Gratitude,

Shari Fiveash, President/CEO

Celebrating a Season of Shelter, Support, and Success

Last week, we wrapped up our 16th season of providing shelter for homeless adults on the Outer Banks. From November 1st until closing, we provided 1,643 room nights and 4,935 meals to those in need. Most importantly, nearly every guest left the shelter employed, taking meaningful steps toward rebuilding their lives.

Finding stable housing in the Outer Banks is challenging, but we remain committed to helping our guests transition out of homelessness. This season, we were able to secure long-term housing for six of our guests! Thanks to the United Way of Albemarle grant, we helped them cover security deposits, easing their journey toward stability. We will continue to stay in touch with them, offering support as needed. Our dedicated team worked tirelessly to find housing and are still searching. If you know of affordable housing or available rooms, please let us know—we are actively seeking placements for a few remaining guests.

We couldn’t have done this without the support of 20 local churches that partner with us. Thanks to you, thousands of meals were served—each one a gesture of kindness and care. A special shoutout to Nags Head Church, whose volunteers not only conducted a deep clean of the shelter after closing but also completed much-needed updates to the intake center, ensuring we’re ready for the next season.

Additionally, we extend our deepest gratitude to Melody Kesterson and the HomeGoods team. Melody went above and beyond, providing donations that allowed our guests to choose new bed sets, bathroom décor, wall art, lamps, and more—turning their new spaces into true homes.

To Our Incredible Team- From intake staff to shelter coordinators, our team is the heart of this mission. They are truly a well-oiled machine, adapting to challenges, supporting every guest’s unique needs, and working tirelessly to ensure a safe and welcoming space. A few of our long-term team members shared, “This is the best season we have had!”—a testament to their passion and dedication.

Because of you, lives have changed, hope has been restored, and our community has come together in ways that truly matter. Your kindness and support make this mission possible.

Although our shelter is now closed for the season, we are still providing food, clothing, and support services. If you know someone in need, please send them our way.

We look forward to reopening the shelter on November 1st. Thank you!

Community Acknowledgement

Community acknowledgement is a powerful tool that breathes life into our communal spaces. By recognizing and valuing the efforts of individuals and groups, we foster an inclusive environment that encourages collaboration.

The impact of acknowledging unsung heroes within our communities cannot be overstated. When we appreciate one another, we strengthen the bonds that hold us together and pave the way for a brighter, more connected future.

Let us commit to uncovering these heroes among us. By elevating their contributions, we create a culture where everyone feels valued, heard, and encouraged to engage. Through acknowledgement, we ensure that our communities thrive now and, in the years to come.

With this in mind, I present to you the “Thank You Wall”. This will serve as a means to publicly acknowledge those who support our mission. Starting off, we would like to acknowledge the following donors:

Guest Services

Below is a list of just some of the services we have provided so far in the 2024-2025 season:

-Assisted 6 guests travel to Elizabeth City to apply for new social security cards, enabling them to seek employment. Currently, 6 are employed.

-Helped a guest secure an eye exam and eyeglasses. Also assisted the same guest in completing applications with Interfaith Community Outreach and Outer Banks Relief Foundation for dental work assistance. The guest requires most of his teeth to be extracted and needs dentures/bridge. These services have been approved and initiated. This involved numerous phone calls, emails, and providing transportation to appointments.

-Helped a guest connect with Crossroads to facilitate his entry into therapy. He has attended his initial appointment, and his second one is set for next week.

-Facilitated detox for two guests through our various partnerships. One guest successfully completed detox, has returned to our program and has recently received his 30-day chip at AA. The second guest left for a long-term treatment facility in Orange County, California. This guest maintains contact and is doing very well.

-Helped a guest arrange an appointment with a local dentist for an examination and cleaning. This guest is now up to date on dental and medical appointments.

-Assisted a guest connect with Interfaith Community Outreach for assistance with his car payment until his first paycheck arrived. We also ensured his cell phone service remained active. This guest has now secured a job and is getting back on track.

-Helped a guest obtain and finance his birth certificate from Alaska to acquire an ID and a social security card.

Furthermore, the Outer Banks Health van was present at the intake center on January 9th to offer health screenings, A1C tests, and flu vaccinations to our guests. The health van is set to return in July, after the season concludes. This will enable us to follow up with guests, conduct another health screening, and address any additional needs they may have.

We have applied for and funded several housing applications. Of all of the applications submitted, three guests have secured housing with move-in dates on April 1st and 15th. RITI has utilized a grant to fund to the move-in costs.
